Mesquite ISD has filtering software in place to prevent students from accessing inappropriate websites while on the district’s Wi-Fi network; however, technology has made it possible for students to bypass these filters through Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps they can install on their personal devices.

To address this problem, whenever one of these VPN apps is detected from a device on our network, district Wi-Fi access will be immediately disconnected for that device.  If this happens, students will need to call our Help Desk at 972-882-7777 to have their device re-enabled. If a student has violated the Student Code of Conduct, those infractions will be handled at the campus level. During this Wi-Fi disruption, students will still be able to text or call their parents through their device provider – just not through Wi-Fi connection.

As parents, you can help us ensure students’ internet safety by checking your child’s personal devices for VPN apps, such as the following: Psiphon, X-vpn, Shotspot Shild, OpenVpn and Ultrasurf. New VPN apps are always coming on the market, though, so it is important to stay vigilant and to monitor the apps on your child’s devices.
